I joined the Merchant Navy 1971, worked through the ranks gaining my Master Mariner certificate in 1981. My Career with the Bank Line provided experience with a range of General cargoes a variety of break bulk, containers and Vegetable oils. All my theoretical training has been based from Fleetwood Nautical College.
It was “round turn” to Join Fleetwood Nautical College in 1998 starting as a lecturer and Induction tutor to new navigation cadets starting out on their Career at sea.
My area of expertise has expanded in the last 20 odd years with the preparation for their MCA Oral examination, primarily Deck Cadets in their Award of Officer of the Watch OOW, but also matching my knowledge of the Col Regs. in preparing both Chief Mates and Masters for their oral examination.
Throughout this period of time I have learned from my peers and gained a high level of expertise of the Col Regs to aid these Officers achieve their goals. It is of great satisfaction to assist in moulding young and not so young seafarers, shaping the future for all areas of the Maritime industry.
To aid this success within my own expertise of the Col Regs and a great team we have developed, a versatile and unique set teaching resources to assist in the demonstration of the IALA Buoyage System and all aspects of the Col Regs. specifically, to use in the class room environment.
We have an expanded the range of resources, with the latest a very portable “Captains box“, affordable, versatile and a useful asset on any vessels Bridge for training purposes.
Leaving school Cheri joined National Westminster, with this banking experience gained locally and with 2 years secondment to the City Hall branch in Westminster, London.
Cheri has 5 years sea time with experience on board vessels traveling extensively worldwide, understudying the 3rd Off/2nd Officer (myself), so is fully Conversent with ship-board life. Cheri‘s inquirers eye for detail has help to replicate the Training Book review carried out by The MCA in Southampton.
Sarah is an experienced teacher with a First Class Honours Degree in Education and a PGCE in English. Prior to working in the education sector, Sarah worked overseas after attending the London academy of music and dramatic art achieving a range of qualifications to instructor position. Previous positions have included head of area, supporting the professional development of teams and governance of academic regulations. Sarah now works across a range of establishments providing support and guidance, ensuring compliance with multiple awarding bodies and national standards. Sarah firmly believes that success in education and professional development is about building relationships and supporting engagement.
Brady Hogg is an experienced engineering manager within the maritime industry, currently working towards Charted Engineer status with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). Before achieving a Master’s degree in Engineering for Maritime Professionals at Plymouth University, Brady also attended Lancaster University and Portsmouth University twice to study education, marine engineering systems and engineering education. Following a successful career in the Royal Navy, as a Marine Engineering Artificer, where he was awarded the NATO Medal for supporting the rescue of refugees during the 2006 Lebanon War, Brady now works at Fleetwood Nautical Campus in order to spend more time with his wife and two daughters, and pursue other interests. As a member of engineering advisory groups and the International Association of Maritime Institutes (IAMI) Engineering sub-group, Brady is actively involved and keen in supporting the development of maritime education and training in order to ensure maritime professionals maintain the highest standards, and support future generations pursuing a career in the industry.
Mike has been working in Maritime Education for over a decade. He has worked with a wide range of students, from introducing new cadets to the industry to supervising MSc dissertation projects. This has allowed him access to a wide range of support materials and learning resources and the opportunity to evaluate their effectiveness when used in specific scenarios. One example is the use of Training Record Books and Work Based Learning Projects to facilitate learning whilst the cadets are at sea. Another is the use of simulated exercises to bridge the gap between theory and its real time application. His current roles include:
Lynn worked in Maritime Education for three years. In this time, she supported cadets and students by organising courses and liaising with sponsors and shipping companies. Prior to this role, she successfully completed a degree in Interior Design. A subject chosen due to her love of art, specifically drawing and painting, and a natural progression from a B-Tec and then an A-Level, both in Fine Art. Her wide-ranging skill set has led to two roles: the first in Governance and GDPR; the second in the development and production of maritime learning resources.
James is a qualified Marine Engineer with many years’ experience lecturing in Maritime education. James started his career as a Carnival UK cadet, training at Warsash Maritime Academy, sailing on various passenger vessels, including the prestigious Queen Mary 2. James qualified as a Marine Engineer in 2011 and that same year completed his BEng (Hons) Marine Engineering and Management. After sailing as 3rd Engineer for several years, James made the decision to come and work shore-sidetaking up a role as a Mechanical Engineer for a large international manufacturing company. He eventually pursued his true passion at Fleetwood Nautical Campus, where he is now responsible for leading the Deck, Engine and ETO cadet programmes. He takes great pride in applying his industry experience to train cadets and the Merchant Navy Officers of the future. James specialises in Engineering mechanics and Marine Engineering. James can offer support with EOOW orals and IAMI exams as well as academic support for mechanics and strength of materials.
